Chromosome 8 encodes about 800 genes across nearly 146 million bases.
Translocation or amplification of the c-Myc gene on chromosome 8 is associated with some leukemias and lymphomas, typically indicating poor prognosis.
Chromosome 8 abnormalities are also linked to schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and conditions such as Warkany syndrome 2 (trisomy 8), Pfeiffer syndrome, congenital hypothyroidism, and Waardenburg syndrome.
The WRN gene on chromosome 8 encodes a DNA helicase defective in Werner syndrome, an early aging disorder.
