Target Information

AFP (Alpha Fetoprotein) is a major plasma protein produced by the yolk sac, intestinal tract, and liver during fetal life.
AFP expression in adults is often associated with hepatoma or teratoma. However, hereditary persistence of AFP may also occur without pathology.
AFP is considered the fetal counterpart of serum albumin, and both genes are located in tandem on chromosome 4.
AFP exists in monomeric, dimeric, and trimeric forms and can bind to copper ions, nickel ions, fatty acids, and bilirubin.
AFP levels in amniotic fluid are used to detect neural tube defects such as spina bifida and anencephaly.
Elevated serum AFP levels are observed in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), teratoblastoma, colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, and germ cell neoplasms.
