E. coli AlkB 단백질은 메틸화제에 의해 생성된 단일가닥 DNA 손상을 복구하여 세포 독성을 방지합니다. ALKBH2와 ALKBH3는 AlkB의 포유류 상동체로, 1-methyladenine 및 3-methylcytosine을 제거하는 효소입니다. 이들 단백질의 돌연변이는 소아 뇌종양에서 발견되며, 암 예방에 중요한 역할을 합니다. ALKBH2는 니켈 이온에 의해 억제되는 비헤메 철 효소로, 암 발생과 관련될 수 있습니다. 또한 Photofrin 매개 광역학 치료 후 glioma 세포에서 ALKBH2의 발현이 증가하며, ALKBH2 억제가 항암 효과를 향상시킬 수 있습니다.
