Target Information
Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) plays a central role in vascular, renal, and myocardial physiology.
Unlike its homolog ACE, ACE2 expression is restricted to heart, kidney, and testis.
ACE2 has been identified as a functional receptor for the SARS coronavirus.
Its physiological role includes converting Angiotensin I (AngI) to Ang1-9 and Angiotensin II (AngII) to Ang1-7.
Deficiency of ACE2 in knockout mice results in severely reduced cardiac contractility, highlighting its importance in heart function regulation.
