Target Information

The vertebrate ocular lens primarily consists of terminally differentiated lens fiber cells. Two lens-specific intermediate filament-like proteins—CP49 (phakinin) and filensin (product of this gene)—are expressed after fiber cell differentiation begins.
These proteins form a unique cytoskeletal structure known as the beaded filament (BF).
Mutations in the BFSP1 gene can cause autosomal recessive cortical juvenile-onset cataract. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
