The protein encoded by the TFB1M gene is a dimethyltransferase that methylates the conserved stem loop of mitochondrial 12S rRNA. It is part of the basal mitochondrial transcription complex and is essential for mitochondrial gene expression. Methylation and transcriptional activities are independent. Variations in this gene may affect aminoglycoside-induced deafness severity.
