Target Information
CHRNA3 locus encodes a member of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor family of proteins. These proteins form pentameric complexes composed of alpha and beta subunits. The CHRNA3 gene encodes an alpha-type subunit characterized by adjacent cysteine residues. The encoded protein functions as a ligand-gated ion channel involved in neurotransmission. Gene polymorphisms are associated with increased risk of smoking initiation and lung cancer susceptibility. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified.
