Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, found in both keratinizing (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing tissues (e.g., mesothelial cells). Although not typical markers for endothelial cells, some microvascular endothelial cells also express cytokeratins.
There are at least 20 cytokeratin subtypes ranging from 40–70 kDa with isoelectric points of 5–8.5. CKs are classified into two types:
- Type I: acidic polypeptides
- Type II: basic polypeptides
Each epithelial cell expresses at least one member of each type. Monoclonal antibodies to cytokeratins are useful for tumor identification and classification.
