Apoptosis Inducing Factor (AIF)는 염색질 응축과 DNA 절편화를 유도하는 단백질로, 세포 사멸(apoptosis) 과정에서 중요한 역할을 합니다. AIF는 미토콘드리아에 존재하며, 세포 사멸이 유도될 때 핵으로 이동하여 염색질 응축과 대규모 DNA 절편화를 유발합니다. 인간과 마우스 간에 높은 보존성을 가지며, 다양한 조직에서 발현됩니다. AIF 유전자 돌연변이는 미토콘드리아 뇌병증을 유발하는 복합 산화적 인산화 결핍 6형과 관련이 있습니다. 대체 스플라이싱으로 여러 전사체 변이가 존재하며, 염색체 10에 관련된 유사 유전자(pseudogene)가 보고되었습니다.
