Comprehensive Design

Rats are an important model organism commonly used for studying human disease. To ensure experimental relevance to transcriptome research, this array is designed based on the most recent genome content for generating genome-wide expression profiles.

The GeneChip™ Gene ST family of arrays offers a unique design feature not available in traditional microarrays. Unlike conventional arrays that rely on probes targeting the first exon at the gene’s 3′ end, each Gene ST Array Plate includes hundreds of thousands of probes designed to every exon of every transcript represented on the array.

With a median of 22 probes per gene, the array provides accurate detection for genome-wide transcript expression changes. This whole-transcript analysis approach enables detection of multiple transcript isoforms from a given gene, including splice variants, non-polyadenylated transcripts, transcripts with alternative polyadenylation sites, and truncated transcripts.

Content Profile

Since the release of the Rat Gene 1.1 ST Array Plates, understanding of the rat genome has expanded significantly, including the discovery of numerous long intergenic non-coding RNAs (lincRNAs). The Rat Gene 2.1 ST Array Plates were designed to measure differential expression of this important class of RNA transcripts, providing a powerful tool for transcriptome-wide studies.
