Target Information
Cluster of differentiation 8 (CD8) is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin family that plays an essential role in T cell signal transduction, differentiation, and activation. CD8 is predominantly expressed on T cells as a disulfide-linked heterodimer of CD8α and CD8β, functioning as a co-receptor with the T cell receptor (TCR) for MHC-I molecules. CD8α is also found on subsets of T cells, NK cells, monocytes, and dendritic cells as homodimers. Engagement of MHC-I/peptide complexes on antigen-presenting cells triggers Lck kinase recruitment, leading to cytokine production, motility, and cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) activation. Activated CTLs are crucial for pathogen and tumor cell clearance. Differentiation of naïve CD8+ T cells into CTLs is enhanced by IL-2, IL-12, and TGF-β1.
