Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the INK4 family of cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors. It interacts with CDK4 or CDK6 to prevent activation of CDK kinases, acting as a cell growth regulator controlling G1 phase progression. Overexpression suppresses cell growth in a manner dependent on wild-type RB1 function. Knockout mouse studies suggest roles in spermatogenesis regulation and tumorigenesis suppression. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been reported.
