Target Information

CRP (C-reactive protein) is a major cyclic, pentameric acute phase protein consisting of five identical, noncovalently bound, nonglycosylated subunits. Each subunit contains 206 amino acids with a molecular weight of 24 kDa. CRP is produced by the liver, and its plasma levels rise dramatically during inflammatory processes. It initiates the classical complement cascade, binds nuclear components (chromatin, histones, etc.), and plays a key role in innate immunity. CRP acts as an opsonin and activates monocytes/macrophages. It may function as a scavenger during cell necrosis and is involved in host defense by recognizing foreign pathogens and damaged cells, initiating elimination via humoral and cellular effector systems. Elevated basal levels of CRP are associated with increased risk of hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
