Glutathione peroxidase catalyzes the reduction of hydrogen peroxide, organic hydroperoxide, and lipid peroxides by reduced glutathione, protecting cells against oxidative damage.
Human plasma glutathione peroxidase is a selenium-containing enzyme, where the UGA codon is translated into selenocysteine.
Through alternative splicing and transcription initiation, rat produces proteins localized to the nucleus, mitochondrion, and cytoplasm.
In humans, experimental evidence supports alternative splicing, but the cleavage sites of mitochondrial and nuclear transit peptides require further verification.
