Target Information
The CHRNA4 gene encodes a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subunit, part of a ligand-gated ion channel superfamily involved in fast synaptic transmission. These pentameric receptors bind acetylcholine, triggering conformational changes that open ion channels across the plasma membrane. The CHRNA4 protein interacts with nAChR beta-2 or beta-4 subunits to form functional receptors. Mutations in this gene are associated with nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy type 1, and certain polymorphisms may confer protection against nicotine addiction.
