Target Information
This gene product is a chymotryptic serine proteinase belonging to the peptidase family S1. It is expressed in mast cells and functions in degradation of the extracellular matrix, regulation of submucosal gland secretion, and generation of vasoactive peptides. In cardiovascular tissues, it converts angiotensin I to angiotensin II, implicating roles in blood pressure regulation, hypertension, cardiac hypertrophy, and heart failure. The gene maps to 14q11.2 within a cluster of protease genes.
