Target Information

Ep-CAM (epithelial adhesion molecule, ESA) is a transmembrane glycoprotein expressed in epithelial tissues (~40 kDa). It functions as a calcium-independent homotypic adhesion molecule and influences cell cycle, proliferation, and metabolism through induction of proto-oncogene c-myc and cyclins A and E.
Ep-CAM-mediated adhesions negatively regulate cadherin-mediated adhesions, affecting epithelial differentiation and growth. Overexpression correlates with enhanced epithelial proliferation and is observed in many human carcinomas, serving as a marker for epithelial lineage tumors.
Ep-CAM is expressed on baso-lateral surfaces of most simple epithelia and various carcinoma types, and can distinguish adenocarcinomas from pleural mesotheliomas.
