Target Information
Aurora kinases are associated with microtubules during chromosome movement and segregation. Aurora B (AURKB) localizes to microtubules near kinetochores, specifically to K-fibers, and functions in chromosome alignment, separation, histone modification, and cytokinesis.
The chromosomal passenger complex (CPC) includes Aurora B along with INCENP, survivin, and borealin, which regulate its activity, localization, and stability. Two CPC forms exist during mitosis: one quaternary complex (INCENP, survivin, borealin, AurB) active in chromosome alignment and cytokinesis, and a binary INCENP–AurB complex involved in histone H3 modification.
Aurora B is overexpressed in various tumors, including primary breast and colon cancers, and its expression correlates with Aurora-A kinase, suggesting a feedback mechanism between the two.
