Ferritin은 원핵생물과 진핵생물에서 주요한 세포내 철 저장 단백질입니다. 24개의 중쇄(H)와 경쇄(L) 서브유닛으로 구성되어 있으며, 서브유닛 조합에 따라 조직별 철 흡수 및 방출 속도가 달라질 수 있습니다. 주요 기능은 철을 용해성이고 무독성 상태로 저장하는 것입니다. Ferritin 경쇄 유전자의 결함은 여러 신경퇴행성 질환 및 고페리틴혈증-백내장 증후군과 관련이 있습니다. Ferritin은 약 450 kDa의 분자량을 가지는 홀로엔자임으로 최대 4,500개의 철 원자를 저장할 수 있습니다.
