Target Information
Periaxin is a protein encoded by the PRX gene in humans. It plays a crucial role in peripheral nerve myelin maintenance. The protein contains two PDZ domains, named after PSD95 (post synaptic density protein), DlgA (Drosophila disc large tumor suppressor), and ZO1 (a mammalian tight junction protein). Two alternatively spliced transcript variants encode different isoforms, which are targeted differently in Schwann cells.
Mutations in this gene are associated with Charcot-Marie-Tooth neuropathy type 4F and Dejerine-Sottas neuropathy.
