Target Information
GFAP (Glial fibrillary acidic protein) is a member of the class III intermediate filament protein family. It is heavily expressed in astrocytes and certain astroglia of the central nervous system, satellite cells of peripheral ganglia, and non-myelinating Schwann cells. Neural stem cells also strongly express GFAP.
Antibodies to GFAP serve as markers for astrocytic cells and are useful in identifying brain tumors derived from astrocytes. GFAP expression is also found in lens epithelium, Kupffer cells, salivary tumors, and erythrocytes.
GFAP helps distinguish astrocytes from other glial cells during development. Mutations in the GFAP gene cause Alexander disease, a rare astrocytic disorder. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms.
For Research Use Only. Not for use in diagnostic procedures. Not for resale without express authorization.
