Target Information
In response to environmental stress, cells increase expression of heat shock proteins (HSPs). The small heat shock proteins (15–30 kDa) are diverse, with single forms in yeast and humans, and multiple forms in higher plants. Elevated stress protein expression has been linked to neoplasia, particularly in estrogen-induced proteins in breast cancer cells. Hsp27 shows rapid phosphorylation upon exposure to mitogens, tumor promoters (e.g., phorbol esters), and calcium ionophores. Expression of a 24 kDa estrogen-induced protein correlates with steroid hormone receptor presence and is highly expressed in breast carcinoma. Hsp27 levels have also been associated with endometrial adenocarcinomas. Regulation of human Hsp27 by estrogens and heat shock resembles ecdysteroid and heat shock activation of Drosophila Hsp20 genes.
