Target Information
In response to adverse environmental changes, cells from many organisms increase expression of heat shock proteins. The small heat shock protein class includes diverse proteins (15–30 kDa), found as single forms in yeast and humans and multiple forms in higher plants. Elevated stress protein expression has been associated with neoplasia, such as estrogen-induced proteins in breast cancer cells. Hsp27 shows rapid phosphorylation upon exposure to mitogens, tumor promoters (e.g., phorbol esters), and calcium ionophores. Expression of a 24 kDa estrogen-induced protein correlates with steroid hormone receptor presence and is highly expressed in breast carcinoma and endometrial adenocarcinoma. Regulation of human Hsp27 by estrogens and heat shock resembles the ecdysteroid and heat shock activation of Drosophila Hsp20 genes.
