Target Information
Vimentin is a developmentally regulated intermediate filament protein (IFP) found in cells of mesenchymal origin. It is involved in intracellular protein transport between the nucleus and plasma membrane. Unlike other IFPs, vimentin is co-expressed with desmin during early cellular development and later replaced by tissue-specific IFPs. It plays a role in steroid synthesis by storing cholesterol-containing lipid droplets and is regulated by phosphorylation, which induces cytoskeletal rearrangements that facilitate cholesterol transport to mitochondria, enhancing steroidogenesis.
