Target Information
Vimentin is a developmentally regulated intermediate filament protein (IFP) found in cells of mesenchymal origin. It is involved in intracellular transport of proteins between the nucleus and plasma membrane. Vimentin is co-expressed with desmin during early cellular development and later replaced by tissue-specific IFPs. It also plays a role in steroid synthesis by regulating cholesterol-containing lipid droplets. Phosphorylation of vimentin by protein kinase leads to cytoskeletal rearrangements that facilitate cholesterol transport to mitochondria, enhancing steroid production.
