Target Information
The enzyme encoded by this gene catalyzes the first two steps, and at least one subsequent step, in the conversion of tyrosine to melanin.
It possesses both tyrosine hydroxylase and dopa oxidase catalytic activities and requires copper for function.
Mutations in this gene can result in oculocutaneous albinism, while nonpathologic polymorphisms contribute to skin pigmentation variation.
The human genome also contains a pseudogene similar to the 3′ half of this gene.
