Target Information

EFO1 (Establishment factor-like protein 1), also known as ESCO1 (establishment of cohesion 1 homolog 1) or ESO1, belongs to the acetyltransferase family (GCN5 subfamily).
It is a ubiquitously expressed nuclear protein essential for sister chromatid cohesion.
At its C-terminus, EFO1 contains an H2C2 zinc finger motif and an acetyltransferase domain that exhibits acetyltransferase activity in vivo.
The N-terminus includes two domains similar to alpha- and beta-type linker histone proteins, which are critical for chromosome association.
EFO1 couples cohesion and DNA replication processes, ensuring proper pairing of sister chromatids.
It is phosphorylated during mitosis, potentially regulating its activity.
Alternative splicing results in three known isoforms of EFO1.
