Target Information
MAOB (Monoamine Oxidase B), also known as MAO, BRAIN, or AMINE OXIDASE (FLAVIN-CONTAINING) B, is encoded by the MAOB gene located on Xp11.3.
It catalyzes the oxidative deamination of biogenic and xenobiotic amines, playing a key role in the metabolism of neuroactive and vasoactive amines in the central nervous system and peripheral tissues.
MAO-B preferentially degrades benzylamine and phenylethylamine and also degrades dopamine. Inhibition of MAO-B enhances dopamine activity and reduces hydrogen peroxide production, which can lower reactive oxygen species levels.
