Interleukin 8 (IL-8, CXCL8)는 72 아미노산으로 구성된 염증 관련 인자로, CXC 케모카인 하위군에 속합니다. IL-8은 세포 표면 수용체 IL-8RA 및 IL-8RB에 결합하며, 강력한 화학주성 및 혈관신생 인자로 작용합니다. 다양한 염증 자극에 의해 대식세포, 내피세포 등에서 발현 및 분비가 유도됩니다. 내피세포에서는 Weibel-Palade 소체에 저장됩니다. IL-8은 CXCR1 및 CXCR2 수용체를 통해 신호를 전달하며, 이전에는 NAP-1, GCP-1, MONAP, protein 3-10C 등의 명칭으로도 알려져 있습니다. IL-8 및 관련 CXC 케모카인 유전자들은 염색체 4q 영역에 위치한 유전자 클러스터를 형성합니다. 암 연구에서는 IL-8이 종양의 혈관신생 및 성장에 관여함이 보고되었으며, 바이러스 감염에 의해 유발되는 기관지염 등의 병리 과정에서도 역할을 하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.
