Slug(SNAI2)는 C2H2-type zinc finger 전사인자 계열인 Snail family의 구성원으로, epithelial-mesenchymal transition 및 신경관 형성에 관여합니다.
FGF, BMP, TGF-beta 등의 성장인자에 의해 발현이 유도될 수 있으며, E-cadherin과 Claudin-1과 같은 유전자의 전사를 억제합니다.
또한, Slug의 발현은 유방암, 식도암, 대장암 등에서 예후 불량과 관련이 있으며, p53 매개 Puma 전사를 억제하여 조혈전구세포를 방사선 유도 세포사멸로부터 보호할 수 있습니다.
