This gene is a member of the natriuretic peptide family and encodes a secreted protein functioning as a cardiac hormone. It undergoes two cleavage events—one intracellularly and another after secretion into the blood. The protein’s biological actions include:

- Inhibition of renin and aldosterone secretion
- Regulation of cardiovascular homeostasis
High levels of this protein in the bloodstream are indicative of heart failure. Mutations in this gene have been associated with postmenopausal osteoporosis.
