Target Information

SOX2 is an intronless gene encoding a member of the SRY-related HMG-box (SOX) family of transcription factors. It plays a critical role in embryonic development and cell fate determination. The SOX2 protein is essential for stem-cell maintenance in the central nervous system and regulates gene expression in the stomach.
The SOX2 gene resides within an intron of the SOX2 overlapping transcript (SOX2OT) gene. SOX2 may function as a transcriptional activator by forming complexes with other proteins.
Mutations in SOX2 are associated with bilateral anophthalmia, optic nerve hypoplasia, and syndromic microphthalmia.
