Target Information
IL12B (IL-12 p40) encodes a subunit of interleukin 12, a cytokine acting on T and NK cells with diverse biological activities.
Interleukin 12 is a disulfide-linked heterodimer composed of a 40 kDa subunit encoded by IL12B and a 35 kDa subunit encoded by IL12A.
It is expressed by activated macrophages and plays a key role in Th1 cell development and maintenance of memory/effector Th1 cells.
Overexpression has been observed in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients, suggesting involvement in disease pathogenesis.
Promoter polymorphisms are linked to asthma severity in children.
