Glutamine synthetase (GS)는 글루타민 합성 효소 패밀리에 속하며, 동물에서 암모니아를 글루탐산에 결합시키는 역할을 합니다. 글루탐산은 질소 대사에서 중심적인 역할을 하며, 신경전달물질 글루탐산의 대사 조절에도 관여합니다. GS의 활성은 아데닐화에 의해 조절되며, Alzheimer’s disease로 영향을 받은 뇌의 대뇌 피질에서 감소하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. 또한 포도당 결핍 조건에서도 감소합니다.
