The monoclonal antibody 8D12 recognizes CD147, a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily also known as EMMPRIN or basigin.
CD147 functions as a tumor cell collagenase stimulating molecule and plays a role in cell adhesion. It associates with integrins α3β1 and α6β1 and is involved in T cell activation and thymocyte cycling.
CD147 is broadly expressed on hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells, particularly tumor cells.
