Target Information
iNOS (Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase, NOS) is an enzyme responsible for the production of nitric oxide (NO), a gaseous signaling molecule involved in vasorelaxation, neurotransmission, and cytotoxicity. iNOS expression is induced in liver and various cell types (macrophages, hepatocytes, synoviocytes, smooth muscle cells) by lipopolysaccharides and cytokines such as IFN-γ, TNF, IL-1, and IL-2.
iNOS catalyzes the oxidation of L-arginine to produce L-citrulline and NO. It contains binding domains for calmodulin, NADPH, FAD, and FMN.
Overexpression or dysfunction of iNOS is associated with diseases including achalasia and impotence.
