Target Information
Adipose tissue serves as an energy reserve and is tightly regulated. Adipocytes secrete proteins such as lipoprotein lipase (LPL), leptin, Acrp30, resistin, and perilipin.
Perilipin is a lipid droplet-associated protein regulated by hormones. It localizes to the surface of lipid droplets and becomes phosphorylated by protein kinase A in response to lipolytic stimuli. Activated perilipin inhibits hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL), which hydrolyzes triacylglycerol, the main stored energy form.
Perilipin expression is restricted to adipocytes and steroidogenic cells. Two isoforms, Perilipin A and B, are produced by alternative splicing of a single gene.
