Target Information
CD1a is a non-polymorphic MHC Class I-related cell surface glycoprotein expressed in association with β2-microglobulin. It is found on cortical thymocytes, Langerhans cells, and interdigitating cells, as well as in some T-cell malignancies and histiocytosis X.
CD1a is structurally related to MHC proteins and forms heterodimers with β2-microglobulin. The CD1 family mediates presentation of lipid and glycolipid antigens of self or microbial origin to T cells.
The human genome contains five CD1 family genes (CD1a, b, c, d, e) organized in a cluster on chromosome 1. These family members differ in localization and lipid ligand specificity. CD1a localizes to the plasma membrane and early endocytic recycling vesicles. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been observed, though their biological validity is undetermined.
