Target Information
Vimentin is a developmentally regulated intermediate filament protein (IFP) found in cells of mesenchymal origin. It plays a role in intracellular transport of proteins between the nucleus and plasma membrane. Vimentin, along with desmin, is expressed during early cellular development and later replaced by tissue-specific IFPs. It is involved in steroid synthesis regulation by acting as a storage network for cholesterol-containing lipid droplets. Phosphorylation of vimentin by protein kinase leads to filament breakdown and cytoskeletal rearrangement, facilitating cholesterol transport to mitochondria and enhancing steroid production.
