Target Information
Vimentin is a developmentally regulated intermediate filament protein (IFP) found in cells of mesenchymal origin. It is involved in intracellular protein transport between the nucleus and plasma membrane. Unlike other IFP proteins, vimentin is expressed with desmin during early cellular development and later replaced by tissue-specific IFPs.
Vimentin is also implicated in steroid synthesis by acting as a storage network for cholesterol-containing lipid droplets. Phosphorylation of vimentin by protein kinase leads to intermediate filament breakdown and cytoskeletal rearrangements, promoting cholesterol transport to mitochondria and enhancing steroidogenesis.
