Target Information
Valproic acid, valproate sodium, and divalproex are anticonvulsants used to control seizures in epilepsy treatment.
Valproic acid also relieves histone deacetylases (HDACs)-dependent transcriptional repression, causing hyperacetylation of histones in cultured cells and in vivo.
It inhibits HDAC activity by binding to the catalytic center of HDACs and induces differentiation of carcinoma cells, hematopoietic progenitor cells, and leukemic blasts.
Furthermore, tumor growth and metastasis formation are significantly reduced in animal models.
Valproic acid may serve as an effective drug for cancer therapy.
