Target Information
Valproic acid, valproate sodium, and divalproex are anticonvulsant compounds used to control certain types of seizures in epilepsy treatment.
Valproic acid relieves histone deacetylases (HDACs) dependent transcriptional repression, leading to hyperacetylation of histones in cultured cells and in vivo. It inhibits HDAC activity, likely by binding to the catalytic center of HDACs.
Furthermore, valproic acid induces differentiation of carcinoma cells, transformed hematopoietic progenitor cells, and leukemic blasts from acute myeloid leukemia patients. Tumor growth and metastasis formation are significantly reduced in animal models, suggesting potential use in cancer therapy.
