Target Information

Prostaglandins are produced by the metabolism of arachidonic acid. Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) is one of the five physiologically significant prostanoids. Its diverse physiological and pharmacological effects are mediated through binding to Prostaglandin E2 receptors (EP1, EP2, EP3, and EP4).
These receptors influence immune, endocrine, cardiovascular, renal, and reproductive systems, as well as smooth muscle function. PGE2 is abundant in the brain, playing roles in neural function and inflammation, particularly in newborns.

EP2 receptors are 358-amino-acid G-protein–coupled receptors with a short third intracellular loop. They stimulate adenylyl cyclase through Gs coupling and do not undergo PGE2-induced internalization. EP2 receptors are mainly localized in lung and placental tissues and smooth muscle, contributing to contraction and relaxation processes.
