Target Information
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a high molecular weight unbranched polysaccharide found in the extracellular matrix of various organisms, from bacteria to mammals. It consists of alternating glucuronic acid and N-acetylglucosamine residues linked by β-1,3 and β-1,4 glycosidic bonds. HA is synthesized by membrane-bound synthase and extruded into the extracellular space, where it functions in space filling, joint lubrication, and as a scaffold for cell migration during wound healing and tissue repair.
Altered serum HA levels are associated with inflammatory and degenerative joint diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. The interaction between HA and the leukocyte receptor CD44 plays a critical role in leukocyte homing, and overexpression of HA receptors correlates with tumor metastasis.
HAS1 is part of the vertebrate gene family encoding hyaluronan synthases, showing significant homology to the hasA gene product of Streptococcus pyogenes.
