Target Information
Integrins are heterodimeric integral membrane proteins composed of an alpha and a beta chain.
CD11b is involved in adhesive interactions of monocytes, macrophages, and granulocytes, and mediates uptake of complement-coated particles. It is identical to CR3, the receptor for the iC3b fragment of complement component 3.
CD11b also serves as a receptor for fibrinogen, factor X, and ICAM1, recognizing P1 and P2 peptides of the fibrinogen gamma chain.
The Mac-1 CD11b antigen is found on macrophages, granulocytes, NK cells, and monocytes, expressed on 8% of spleen cells, 44% of bone marrow cells, and <1% of thymocytes. It is commonly used as a microglial marker in nervous tissue.
CD11c encodes the integrin alpha X chain, which forms with beta 2 (ITGB2) to create leukocyte-specific integrin CR4 (iC3b receptor 4). The αXβ2 complex overlaps with αMβ2 integrin in neutrophil and monocyte adhesion to stimulated endothelium and phagocytosis of complement-coated particles.
Mutations affecting the CD11b/c gene can lead to systemic lupus erythematosus 6.
