Defensins (alpha and beta) are cationic peptides with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, forming an essential part of the innate immune system.

• Beta-defensins differ from alpha-defensins in the pairing of their three disulfide bonds.
• Six human beta-defensins have been identified: BD-1, BD-2, BD-3, BD-4, BD-5, and BD-6.
• They are expressed on certain leukocytes and epithelial surfaces.
• In addition to antimicrobial activity, they act as chemoattractants for immature dendritic cells and memory T cells.
• Beta-defensins are expressed as C-terminal portions of precursors and released by proteolytic cleavage.
• They contain a six-cysteine motif forming three intramolecular disulfide bonds.
