Target Information

Receptor for GABA. The activity of this receptor is mediated by G-proteins that inhibit adenylyl cyclase activity, stimulate phospholipase A2, activate potassium channels, inactivate voltage-dependent calcium channels, and modulate inositol phospholipids hydrolysis. Plays a critical role in fine-tuning inhibitory synaptic transmission.
Pre-synaptic GABA-B receptors inhibit neurotransmitter release by down-regulating high-voltage activated calcium channels, whereas postsynaptic GABA-B receptors decrease neuronal excitability by activating inwardly rectifying potassium (Kir) conductance underlying late inhibitory postsynaptic potentials.
Implications include synaptic inhibition, hippocampal long-term potentiation, slow wave sleep, muscle relaxation, and antinociception.
