Target Information
Influenza A virus is a major public health threat, responsible for over 30,000 deaths annually in the USA. In 2009, a novel swine-origin influenza A (H1N1) virus emerged, spreading globally and declared a pandemic by WHO.
Influenza A virus has 16 possible Hemagglutinin (HA) and 9 Neuraminidase (NA) surface proteins. HA aids viral attachment, while NA facilitates viral release and elicits immune responses.
The 2009 H1N1 strain combined human, swine, and avian influenza gene segments with additional pig H3N2 genes of Eurasian origin. Its distinct antigenic profile limits preexisting human immunity, though partial protection may exist in older populations.
