ALDH1A1는 알데하이드 탈수소효소(Aldehyde dehydrogenase) 계열 단백질에 속하며, 알코올 대사의 주요 산화 경로 중 두 번째 효소입니다. 간에는 세포질형과 미토콘드리아형 두 가지 주요 아이소폼이 존재하며, 전기영동 이동성, 효소학적 특성, 세포 내 위치에 따라 구별됩니다. 대부분의 백인은 두 주요 아이소자임을 가지지만, 약 50%의 동양인은 미토콘드리아형이 결여된 세포질형만을 가지고 있습니다. 이는 동양인에서 급성 알코올 중독 빈도가 높은 이유와 관련 있을 수 있습니다.
