Target Information
BI-1 (Bax Inhibitor 1) is an anti-apoptotic protein associated with protection against apoptosis induced by endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. BI-1 contains multiple transmembrane domains, localizes to ER membranes, and exhibits conserved cytoprotective functions across species. It suppresses apoptosis triggered by Bax overexpression and other stimuli. Cells from BI-1 knockout mice are hypersensitive to ER stress-induced apoptosis or ischemia-reperfusion injury, whereas BI-1 overexpression confers protection. The protective mechanism likely involves regulation of ER Ca²⁺ handling.
